About the Item

1950s Neoclassical Revival Cage Chandelier with Large Flat-Cut Crystals A grand Empire-style chandelier dating to the mid-20th century, characterized by its open "birdcage" structure and distinctive crystal ornamentation. This fixture captures the opulence of 19th-century Neoclassical design, updated with the proportions and craftsmanship of the 1950s. The body is constructed from gilded brass, featuring curving arms that form an elegant, open framework around a central glass baluster. Unlike typical chandeliers with faceted drops, this piece is dressed with large, flat-cut crystal plaques. These "scalloped" crystals are unusual for their size and shape; they capture and reflect light in broad, liquid sheets rather than fragmented sparkles, creating a softer, more atmospheric glow. The design is crowned with a crystal spray at the top and finished with a faceted finial at the base. Ideally suited for a dining room or entryway with high ceilings, where its transparency and verticality can be fully appreciated. Good vintage condition. The brass retains a warm, aged patina. The crystals are intact, with minor signs of age appropriate for the period.
