About the Item

A magnificent and exceedingly rare pair of Art Moderne crystal lanterns by the renowned Viennese lighting manufacturer J.T. Kalmar, circa 1951. Each lantern features a striking cylindrical body composed of curved cast glass sections with a distinctive crystal dispersion texture, secured by elegant brass mounts. Suspended from a polished brass rod and canopy, the fixtures are crowned with cascading strands of crystal beads that hang gracefully from the central ring at the bottom, creating a mesmerizing waterfall effect when illuminated. 5 Candelabra Sockets per fixture J.T. Kalmar, founded in Vienna in the 1880s, became one of Austria's most prestigious lighting manufacturers under the direction of Julius Theodor Kalmar, who studied under Josef Hoffmann at the Vienna School of Applied Arts. The company's collaborations with the Austrian Werkbund and commissions for landmark institutions including the Vienna State Opera, the Burgtheater, and the Vienna Stock Exchange cemented their reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and forward-thinking design. This pair represents an extraordinarily rare example from Kalmar's early 1950s production, a transitional period before the company's widely recognized ice-glass fixtures of the 1960s and 1970s. What distinguishes these lanterns is the remarkable combination of two distinct design elements rarely seen together in Kalmar's oeuvre: the textured crystal dispersion glass panels AND cascading crystal bead strands. The matched pair status further enhances the rarity and value, as original pairs from this period are exceptionally difficult to source. These lanterns exemplify Kalmar's philosophy of creating lighting that serves as "quite humble things" meant to "fit in and serve their purpose of functionally illuminating spaces" while simultaneously achieving extraordinary beauty through material quality and refined craftsmanship. Condition: Excellent vintage condition with beautiful aged patina on brass elements. Fully functional and ready for installation.
