About the Item
A fine and unusual antique French Art Deco style silvered bronze figural chandelier. The chandelier is structured with a central circular body, from which four sweeping branches extend outward, each supporting two lights. The candle-form sockets are mounted in upward-facing fluted cups with scalloped rims, and each is fitted with flame-shaped bulbs. At the center rests a sculptural figure seated upon a domed base, rendered in silvered bronze with detailed musculature and an outstretched arm. Rising behind the figure is a frosted glass flame finial, adding to the architectural presence of the piece. The chandelier is suspended from three rods joined to a domed canopy, with a small acorn-shaped pendant drop beneath the lower section.
The branches are further decorated with cast masks at their junctions, merging into the horn-shaped supports that curve inward toward the central body. The domed base features chased patterns of repeating borders, giving structure to the central mount on which the figure is posed. The frosted glass flame is set into a silvered bronze collar and rises above the figure, forming the main vertical accent of the design. The arrangement of eight candle-lights, four on each side, provides balance to the sculptural centerpiece, with the fluted cups echoing classical lotus or palmette forms. The suspension rods terminate in small ornamental details at the canopy, which mirrors the acorn drop below for symmetry.
This chandelier was produced in France in the Art Deco period, a time when lighting design merged sculptural bronze work with geometric composition and modern finishes. The use of silvered bronze, rather than the warmer tones of gilt, reflects the preference for cooler metallic surfaces associated with early 20th-century interiors. The integration of a mythological-style figure and decorative masks recalls traditional French bronze casting, while the streamlined symmetry and strong verticality connect it to the modern tendencies of the 1920s and 1930s.
