About the Item

A fine antique French Empire neoclassical gilt and patina bronze chandelier. The chandelier is suspended from a circular corona decorated with a continuous band of gilt laurel leaves in relief, from which hang four elongated gilt bronze chains with alternating rectangular and circular links. These chains connect to the central body, which is circular with a dark patina bronze ground, mounted with applied gilt bronze rosettes and a surrounding frieze of acanthus leaves. Rising from the center is a gilt flame finial composed of overlapping leaves, set above the circular dish-shaped body. The lower section terminates in a pinecone finial with additional foliate relief details. The chandelier features six scrolling gilt bronze branches, each terminating in a candle socket and drip pan designed to hold candle-form lights. The arms are richly ornamented with acanthus scrollwork, rosettes, and floral swags, consistent with Empire style decoration. The circular dish is further adorned with applied foliage and leaf sprays in relief, complementing the overall classical symmetry of the design. The surface treatment contrasts the matte dark patina with the bright gilt mounts, emphasizing the details of the ornamentation. Produced in France during the Empire period, this chandelier exemplifies the neoclassical revival style that dominated the decorative arts of the early 1800s.
