About the Item

A fine antique French Louis XV style gilt bronze and cut rock crystal chandelier. The chandelier is structured around a central stem from which twelve scrolling gilt bronze arms extend, each terminating in circular drip pans and candle-form light sockets. The arms are richly curved in the rococo manner, displaying fluid scrollwork and floral detailing. Suspended throughout the frame are cut rock crystal pendants of varying forms, including teardrops, prisms, and a large faceted sphere at the base. The chandelier is further adorned with garlands of faceted crystal beads linking the arms and upper sections, adding layers of articulation to the frame. The gilt bronze framework displays chased rococo ornamentation, with foliate scrolls and floral rosettes incorporated into the structure. The rock crystal pendants are hand-cut, displaying both elongated drops and faceted teardrops, many of which are suspended from rosette-form crystal mounts. A canopy of rock crystal chains descends from the upper corona, terminating in large drops that emphasize the vertical structure of the chandelier. The drip pans are fitted with additional crystal elements, from which small prisms and drops are suspended. The chandelier reflects the French tradition of combining gilt bronze with cut rock crystal. This technique reached prominence during the reign of Louis XV and was carried forward into later revivals. The use of natural rock crystal, rather than glass, indicates the luxurious production methods associated with high-quality Parisian workshops of the period. Such chandeliers required collaboration between bronze casters, gilders, and lapidaries skilled in cutting and polishing hardstone crystal.
