About the Item

A delicate antique French Louis XVI style chandelier combining gilt bronze and Wedgwood elements. The central body is shaped as an urn form, executed in blue jasperware with applied white reliefs depicting classical figures framed by scrollwork. The porcelain section is surmounted by a gilt bronze collar decorated with a band of rosettes and suspended floral garlands, while the base is fitted with a molded foliate mount that transitions into the branching arms. Extending from the central structure are six gilt bronze arms, each scrolling outward with acanthus leaf detailing and terminating in circular drip pans and candle sockets. The sockets are modeled with acanthus ornament and retain their original gilt surface. Each arm is further enriched with rope-twist and floral motifs, the branches meeting at a central finial with a pendant knop. The overall arrangement is symmetrical, with careful articulation of classical decorative patterns consistent with Louis XVI taste. The chandelier reflects the French neoclassical revival, which often incorporated Wedgwood jasperware mounted with gilt bronze. Workshops in Paris frequently collaborated with Wedgwood, producing mounted objects such as vases, candelabra, and chandeliers. The present example demonstrates the use of jasperware as a central decorative feature within French lighting, while the gilt bronze mounts display the finely chased foliate, rosette, and garland motifs characteristic of Parisian bronze work of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
