About the Item

A fine antique French neoclassical style carved alabaster and bronze chandelier. The chandelier is composed of a carved alabaster bowl-form body suspended from a series of patinated bronze chains attached to a circular ceiling mount. The alabaster is shaped into an inverted dome with a fluted lower section and a rounded finial of bronze below. The upper edge of the alabaster bowl is bordered with a carved band of alternating oval motifs, while the area beneath displays a continuous frieze of scrolling foliage and floral patterns. The body of the chandelier is decorated with relief carvings of winged figures, each angel holding either a trumpet or a shield, positioned between tall torchères and fluted architectural columns. The surface of the alabaster is worked in shallow relief, the figures and ornaments carefully defined against the smooth background. The chandelier features bronze mounts that serve both as functional supports and decorative accents. The bronze suspension chains, composed of large oval links, converge into a ribbed canopy finial, which is secured to the ceiling plate with a central acorn drop. The bronze is patinated to a dark tone, providing a contrast to the pale alabaster. At the base, a carved alabaster ring with leaf decoration surrounds a bronze acorn terminal, completing the design with symmetry. This chandelier follows the neoclassical style, popular in France during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, characterized by its incorporation of classical motifs and balanced proportions. Alabaster was frequently employed in lighting of this type, valued for its translucent qualities, while the use of bronze mounts reflects the French tradition of combining functional materials with decorative metals.
