About the Item

A fine quality mid-Victorian eight-light frosted glass chandelier. The main baluster stem formed as a fountain, the drop hung flute decorated receiver bowl supported by a lapidary cut finial, the arm plate surmounted with eight plain pipe arms. Drop hung scalloped edged drip pans, and scalloped edged candle nozzles, the chandelier is hung with plain Albert’s drops and eight sided spangles. It is thought that many frosted chandeliers were made by order of Queen Victoria to reflect the mood of the country after Prince Albert’s death (December 14th 1861). After this date the frosted chandelier became ever more fashionable, although some earlier examples do exist, the frosted chandelier were mainly of a plainer form and somewhat less elaborate than their richly cut counterparts. Because of their classic looks many examples would not look out of place in today’s modern interiors.
