About the Item

A stunning and most impressive pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. Ormolu and frosted Glass chandeliers, after a model by Pierre Gouthière for Marie Antoinette. Each exquisite seven light chandelier is centered by a berried foliate designed bottom finial located below the base of the central fut. The base of the fut is tastefully decorating with acanthus leaves that lead to the six arms above. Each of the six elaborately scrolling arms are decorated by reeded designs and scrolling acanthus leaves with berried rosettes in the center. Moving upwards on the round fluted central fut are a three cherubs playing trumpets on the top capital. The musical cherubs flank a spiral fluted torch with frosted glass which serves as the seventh light on each chandelier. Between each of the three seated cherubs are three chains with crest shaped Ormolu links leading to the top crown. The top crown consists of a beautiful acanthus leaf spray. The original model for this Chandelier was designed by Pierre Gouthière for Le Cabinet Doré in Marie-Antoinette’s private apartments at the Palace of Versailles, where it remains to this day. A design for the chandelier by Gouthière survives in the collections of the Museé des Arts Décoratifs.
