About the Item

An exceptional and very unique French 19th century Louis XVI st. wrought iron, gilt metal, and crystal chandelier likely by Maison Bagues. The six arm seven light chandelier is centered by a charming and most unique bottom crystal pendant below lovely gilt metal acanthus leaves from where the elegantly scrolled arms branch out. The arms are adorned with a striking array of clear and tawny colored crystal pendants and striking gilt metal foliate accents leading to lovely floral bobeches and most decorative spiral fluted candle cups. At the center is a beautiful basket housing one light bulb amidst additional teardrop shaped crystal pendants with the graceful wrought iron cage leading upwards to a curved crystal reserve and remarkable gilt metal acanthus leaf top crown. Maison Bagues Founded in Auvergne, France, in 1840 by Nicolas Baguès, the company originally specialized in the creation of liturgical bronzes. Thanks to Baguès’ expansion into bronze lighting and the popularization of electricity, the business quickly found success. At the turn of the century, their chandeliers captured international interest, and soon Baguès began exporting to London, New York, Rome, Brussels, and Cairo. The company is best known for introducing to the world their now signature collections of finely crafted iron, gilt, and crystal chandeliers and wall sconces Parrots Foliage.
