About the Item

A spectacular French Louis XVI style gilt bronze and carved alabaster chandelier. The chandelier is suspended from a domed gilt bronze canopy with acanthus leaf motifs and a heavy chain support that divides into four descending sections. The central structure is a circular alabaster bowl carved with a fluted lower section and terminating in a gilt bronze finial. The alabaster is mounted within a gilt bronze frame decorated with a frieze of scrolling foliage. Eight gilt bronze arms extend outward in a symmetrical arrangement, each scrolling in a pronounced curve and supporting a circular drip pan with leaf and rope molding. These arms hold candle-form light fittings with shaped glass flame shades. The chandelier is constructed with an emphasis on classical motifs consistent with the Louis XVI design. The gilt bronze frame is enriched with repetitive foliate ornament and acanthus-mounted supports at the junctions of the arms and body. Each chain terminates into the rim of the frame through scrollwork and foliate clasps, securely binding the upper section to the alabaster body below. The drip pans and candle cups are ribbed and bordered with twisted rope details, integrating with the scrolls of the arms. The alabaster bowl remains undecorated aside from the carved fluted base, allowing contrast between the polished white stone and the richly chased gilt bronze. The chandelier demonstrates the French Louis XVI style, characterized by the combination of gilt bronze mounts and white carved stone, with classical ornamentation such as acanthus, laurel, and guilloche.
