About the Item
A fine antique French Louis XVI style gilt bronze and rock crystal chandelier. The chandelier is composed of six scrolling gilt bronze arms, each supporting candle-form lights with drip pans ornamented by foliage. Suspended from the arms and central structure are large faceted and teardrop rock crystal pendants, with smaller rosettes mounted between the branches. The chandelier is surmounted by a gilt bronze corona with acanthus leaf motifs, from which hang elongated rock crystal drops and faceted beads. At the base of the central shaft rests a detailed gilt bronze parrot perched on a sphere, forming a prominent decorative feature of the composition.
The structure is formed of gilt bronze, cast and chased with leafwork and scrolls, creating the armature for the lights and crystal drops. Each branch terminates in foliate candle sockets supporting faux candle lights. The rock crystal pendants vary in form, including faceted spheres, elongated drops, and large pear-shaped elements, suspended on wire fittings attached to bronze rosettes. A series of graduated faceted balls is suspended along the central axis, with a larger spherical pendant centering the lower tier. The parrot figure, wings partially extended, is integrated into the base of the chandelier, modeled with detailed plumage and raised on a leafy support.
This chandelier follows the Louis XVI style, noted for its neoclassical ornamentation and incorporation of natural motifs. The use of gilt bronze combined with rock crystal was widespread among Parisian workshops of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly in chandeliers designed for grand interiors. The presence of a bird figure, such as the parrot perched at the center, is a distinctive element within the decorative vocabulary of the period, adding a sculptural focal point to the chandelier’s overall design.
