About the Item

A unique and spectacular French Empire-style gilt bronze and red-painted tole chandelier featuring a circular form suspended by three elongated gilt bronze chains. The central body is composed of a domed, red-tole canopy, decorated with a gilt bronze acorn finial at the top and a series of applied rosettes and floral mounts around the banded edge. From the lower rim extend six gilt bronze candle arms, each modeled as a swan with outstretched wings curving outward, supporting candle-form lights with tall cream-painted shafts and flame-form bulbs. The underside of the tole body is further enriched with applied gilt rosettes and a central pendant finial. The chandelier is supported by a crown-form corona decorated with gilt bronze rose motifs, from which the suspension chains descend. The swan's arms are cast in detail, with feather and head features carefully defined. The gilt bronze candle cups and nozzles rise vertically, carrying the candle-form lights that complete the circular arrangement around the central red-painted canopy. The combination of tole and gilt bronze decoration creates a strong visual distinction, with the domed red body providing a bold backdrop to the applied ornament. This chandelier reflects the design vocabulary of the French Empire style, with its use of gilt bronze swan arms, rosettes, and acorn finials, all elements characteristic of early 20th-century decorative lighting.
