About the Item

French late 19th century Gothic Revival iron chandelier made for electricity – we can tell since the bulbs are pointing down, to show the novelty of the electric light. Each arm is a winged dragon joined to the center, holding a ring in its mouth holding flower petals, with a bulb that is the stamen, pointing down. The center ring is adorned with alternating large Maltese Cross motifs. The larger rings to which the dragons are joined, is suspended from a smaller ring of identical design, joined by twisted iron rings in a “V” design, with a hook at the top. Each piece in our shop is professionally rewired and in working order. They have been rewired at our fourth generation antique store in The French Quarter of New Orleans. Each chandelier and lantern comes with a vintage canopy, three feet of chain, and ample wire, and each sconce comes with all materials needed to mount. Each piece is newly wired with UL approved wire and sockets and is fully operable. This piece is a collection of a fourth generation, family owned business in New Orleans called The French Antique Shop. The store was first opened by Marie and Marcel Granet in Paris when they married in 1927. A jewish family, they came to the United States before the outbreak of the Second World War, leaving on the last boat out of Paris' port, Le Havre. When they reached New Orleans, they fell in love with the Vieux Carre as it reminded them of home. Their first shop here in New Orleans was located on Chartres Street in the French Quarter and was stocked originally with pieces they had brought with them from Paris. They moved to Royal Street and settled in their present expanded location at 225 Royal Street in 1947. Today, the shop is run by the third and fourth generation, Marc, and his two sons Michael and Brian. This immaculate Gothic Revival Chandelier features fantastically detailed and patterned bronze d’ore. The French antique piece dates back to the 19th century and sports a spiraling fluted crown at top. Moving down the center stem we see three gorgeously detailed falcon heads protecting the room below. Acanthus leaves rest on the stylized torch arms. A detailed floriate design with grape vines fills the bronze d’ore above the winged gargoyles at bottom.
