About the Item

A French Louis XVI style gilt bronze and silvered bronze figural chandelier embellished with four figures of soldiers. The chandelier features a hexagonal gilt bronze frame centered by an architectural stem surmounted by pierced gothic-style finials and scrollwork supports. The suspended structure rises to an elaborate canopy formed by intertwined scrolls and dragon-form terminals, from which a series of spires descend to anchor the candle arms. Each of the six candle arms terminates in circular candle cups with foliate and lattice ornamentation, mounted with imitation candle lights. Around the central section stand four cast silvered bronze figures representing armored soldiers in Renaissance-style attire, each positioned between the uprights. The soldiers are depicted standing in contrapposto, clad in full plate armor with helmets, breastplates, and greaves, and each holds a spear upright beside him. The detailed modeling of the armor, including the rivets, fluting, and plume decorations, shows precise metalworking, contrasting with the smooth polished finish of the silvered surfaces. The figures are set against the architectural framework, giving balance between the sculptural and structural elements. The chandelier’s construction demonstrates a combination of gilt and silvered bronze, a technique common in fine 19th-century French decorative bronzes. The gilt bronze retains a rich color and is worked with sharp precision, particularly in the tracery motifs and foliate patterns. The silvered bronze figures provide a distinct tonal contrast, enhancing the visual rhythm between the structural and decorative parts.
