About the Item
The Gaia collection brings a modern twist to lighting with spheres that revive the Mid-century Murano technique of Mezza Filigrana. This collection offers flexibility, allowing you to mix and match different patterns or feature a single design to create a unique look.
Nearly forgotten, the Mezza Filigrana technique has been revived with custom-designed hardware. I’ve created nine distinct patterns using Murano filigrana in Lattimo white, Black, Amber, and Red.
Each glass sphere measures 35 cm (14 inches) and is paired with contemporary hardware that highlights the design with a clear, unobstructed view. This piece is perfect for grouping above a dining table, hanging over an island, or suspended in a stairwell.
This version features an elegant all Lattimo white filigree pattern, inspired by the works in Mezza Filigrana of Carlo Scarpa, known for his clean, refined style. Sometimes this dense and compact Mezza Filigrana is called Tessuto. I collaborated with a Murano maestro to perform two full ritorto stretching spins (called “menà” in the Muranese dialect) on the mosaic of over 70 canes, resulting in a dense criss-crossed pattern.
The Gaia pattern is formed by rolling glass over a mosaic of Murano smalto filigree. The glass is spun twice before blowing, which turns the canes into spirals. The tips are then cut with scissors, producing the signature see-through effect called reticello. This finish is known as mezza filigrana, where “filigrana” refers to the reticello, and “grano” represents the bubbles inside the web.
The solid brass hardware houses an Italian-made LED module that produces 1000 lumens, is dimmable, and has a CRI above 90 for accurate color rendering. With no central socket or bulb, the design remains fully visible. The silk wire and UL-CE SELV driver are seamlessly integrated into the brass canopy.
