About the Item

This vary rare and extravagantly designed cocoon light is in excellent condition with no holes, tears or rust! Rather substantial in size, this well proportioned light fixture is a stunning piece of Mid-Century Modern design! The soft edges of the metal frame and the unique material make this lamp an eye-catching focal point while illuminating the room with a beautiful diffused warm light. The clean pearl-white color of this light is a strong indicator that this lamp originated from a NON-SMOKING environment.. We think it would fit well with any Mid-Century Modern or even modernist or minimalist interior setting. Often attributed and very close to the designs of Achille Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. In fact this cocoon was manufactured in Germany by “Goldkant Leuchten" between the 1950s and 60s . The designer Fritz Wauer was credited by FLOS for devising the technology of spraying the self wrapping foam onto metal frames - just like Silk worms constructing their cocoon. After that innovation this was brought to the established Italian FLOS Designers like Carlo Tobia Scarpa, Dino Gavina and of course to the brothers Achille Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. This makes these Goldkant models the original predecessor to later cocoon lamps. Please note: With a lifetime of stories behind them, our vintage design items come with a bit of character.
