About the Item

Important chandelier from one of Finland’s most iconic restaurants: Ravintola Kuusihokki, also known as Restaurant No. 11, and today Restaurant Meiccu. This piece is one of only five chandeliers that illuminated the restaurant from the moment it opened its doors in 1946. We had the rare privilege to acquire the complete set, restore them to their former glory, and introduce the very first fully restored and ready example here. The restaurant also featured six wall lamps from the same ensemble; we were equally fortunate to obtain all six, and a fully restored pair is now listed on 1stdibs. Design Craftsmanship: This is the earliest chandelier in the 90xx series, model 9001/8. It features a full brass body with eight arms supported by ribbon-like elements tied elegantly around the central rod—an architectural, sculptural gesture characteristic of early postwar Tynell design. The wooden slatted shades, fitted into floating glass discs, embrace the bulbs with a warm, refined glow. Light and graceful, the lamp has a visual harmony that defines the best of Tynell’s work. Restoration: After nearly 80 years of continuous use, the chandelier was professionally restored. The brass carried heavy patination, the wiring required full updating, and the shades were remade by hand following the original construction. Please see before-restoration photos. Historical Importance: The lighting suite at Kuusihokki (Meiccu) originally came from another landmark: the iconic Vaakuna Hotel—considered a sister project and also fitted throughout with Paavo Tynell lighting. The restaurant itself is recognized as a culturally significant heritage site, and these lamps carry that heritage in a very real way. It is a privilege to have rescued them, restored them with care, and now oversee to their transition into new homes for the next 80 years and beyond. Due to their cultural value, an export permit is required—but we have already secured it. Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) is celebrated as the designer who “illuminated Finland.” His works appear in major public buildings, including the Main Railway Station in Helsinki and numerous other important sites. Trained as a metalworker and later a teacher, he co-founded Taito Oy in 1918. After WWII, his distinctive style found major success in the United States through Finland House in New York. Today his finest lamps command international recognition and substantial collector interest.
