About the Item

A rare 1970s Italian pendant by Umberto Ghersi—sculpted in ceramic with a cratered surface. The globe shade glows from within, rendered in shifting glazes of sky blue, pale violet, and ochre. Iconography emerges in relief, each medallion encircled and half-obscured, like fragments from a ruined fresco. Suspended from a heavily textured stem and canopy glazed in soft pastels, the fixture feels part relic, part sculpture. Umberto Ghersi (1913–1993) was a painter, decorator, and ceramist born into a storied lineage of Ligurian majolica makers. He trained in the workshops of Poggi and La Casa dell’Arte before working across several Albisola ateliers, including Fenice, S.P.I.C.A., and M.G.A. In the mid-1930s, he partnered with Bianco d'Albisola at the Pozzo Garitta factory. Ghersi later co-founded Soesco, which was absorbed into Rayon, where he remained through its transition into Manifattura Ceramiche Italia. In 1964, he established his own studio—Ghersi Umberto Ceramiche—in Albissola Mare, marking a return to personal expression in clay. Condition: Great vintage condition. This pendant has been professionally rewired by our team of restorationists with a new thread and hanging system. Canopy and stem included. Accepts one E26 base light bulb.
