About the Item

The "Aurora" pendant light for Arteluce, then a division of Flos, was designed in 1980 by Perry King and Santiago Miranda. The Aurora provides direct and diffused light with three 50-watt halogen bulbs from a suspended disk made of a pair of textured glass plates sandwiching a blue carbon filter disk. The dark blue domed ceiling cap houses a transformer. The dark blue suspension wires are adjustable for length. The interior of the light cups is purple. Fun! Perry King and Santiago Miranda were a highly influential industrial design partnership that founded King Miranda Design in the mid-1970s. They worked on a diverse range of projects for companies worldwide, notably designing furniture, lighting, and office products, including pieces for Arteluce and the "Lisa Chair" for Baleri Italia. Their work is recognized for its blend of technological innovation, functionality, and cultural relevance, and both designers were deeply involved in teaching and research. Flos, founded in Merano, Italy in 1962 by Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina, quickly became a leader in Italian lighting design through its collaboration with designers like the Castiglioni brothers to create iconic products using innovative materials such as the spray-on "Cocoon" plastic. After 1965 management by Sergio Gandini, the company expanded internationally, acquired Arteluce, and began working with famous designers like Philippe Starck, establishing a global reputation for high-quality, avant-garde lighting. Under the leadership of Sergio's son, Piero Gandini, Flos continues to balance artisan craftsmanship with modern technology, solidifying its legacy as a pioneer in the design world.
