DESCRIPTION
This rare Italian pendant chandelier exemplifies the refined transition between late Art Nouveau influences and early Art Deco rigor that characterized Italian design of the late 1920s and early 1930s. Executed in hand-forged wrought iron, the structure displays a disciplined geometric vocabulary softened by subtle ornamental cadence-an approach closely associated with the Milanese milieu of Emilio Lancia and Gio Ponti during their formative collaborations.
The lantern-form body is articulated by architectonic iron profiles, carefully proportioned and rhythmically stepped, enclosing diffusing plexiglass panels that replace the original glass in a historically coherent manner. The single-light configuration emphasizes clarity of form and structural honesty, allowing the metal framework to define the object's visual identity. The naturally aged patina enhances the sculptural quality of the iron and underscores the craftsmanship typical of Italian artisanal production of the period.
Attributed to Lancia and Ponti, this chandelier reflects their shared pursuit of a modern Italian language rooted in classical balance, material integrity, and decorative restraint-principles that would later fully mature within Italian Rationalism.
