About the Item
Designed in the 1950s, this Italian Murano glass chandelier embodies the artistry and innovation synonymous with Archimede Seguso. Composed of cascading textured glass drops, this chandelier showcases delicately undulating forms that create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, highlighting the organic beauty of handblown Murano glass. Suspended from a chrome chain and framework, it emits a soft, diffused glow.
Archimede Seguso revolutionized a 650-year family tradition of Murano glassmaking, elevating himself as a master and mentor for both his contemporaries and future generations. Raised in the family’s Soffieria Barovier Seguso and Ferro, he began his training at age 11 and was a maestro by 20, joining the family business as a partner. In 1933, Seguso took sole control of the company, renaming it Seguso Vetri D’Arte. His collaboration with designers like Flavio Poli and Vittorio Zecchin led to artistic independence, culminating in the 1946 opening of his own furnace, Vetreria Seguso Archimede.
Seguso's lifetime of accomplishments is celebrated in museums around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, MoMA in New York, and Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf. His exhibition history spans several decades, starting with the XX Biennale in Venice in 1936. Notable exhibitions include "Il Maestro dei Maestri" at Tiffany
Co. in New York in 1989, and more recently, shows at the Musée Maillol in Paris and the Museo della Basilica di San Marco in Venice in 2013.
