Large antique 19th century Russian ormolu chandelier Russian, Late 19th Century Height 133cm, diameter 124cm This grand chandelier, crafted in Russia during the late 19th century, exemplifies the period's eclectic design, combining a variety of styles that were in vogue at the time. The chandelier’s central column is adorned with a selection of captivating motifs. At the top, winged lions are mounted, evoking the ancient symbols of prosperity, strength, and courage found in Greek and Roman cultures. Below them, three phoenixes are gracefully positioned, symbolising immortality and regeneration. This antique’s most lavish feature is its array of lights, each supported by ormolu branches. These elegantly curve and culminate in decorative candlecups that house candle-like light fixtures. The lights themselves are surrounded by delightful ornamental creatures, including a charming squirrel and a regal eagle perched on clusters of flowers. Dragons are also featured in the design. The base of the chandelier is crowned with a decorative finial, complete with three winged caryatids seemingly bearing the weight of the chandelier upon their outstretched wings. Above them, several cherubs, possibly cupids, lend their support, further enhancing the overall elegance. The design is enriched with scrolling acanthus leaves, contributing to its opulent aesthetic.
