About the Item

An enormous and stunning antique English Regency style gilt bronze and crystal chandelier. The chandelier is designed with a circular frame suspended by four decorative chains, leading upward to a crown-form canopy hung with faceted crystal drops. The main body is arranged with six candle-form lights, each set into gilt bronze arms with scrolled branches terminating in glass bobeches. From these extend faceted crystal prisms, which are repeated along the perimeter of the circular frame in alternating graduated rows, creating a dense skirt of drops around the circumference. The underside of the frame is fitted with a central cut glass dish, further embellished with a cluster of suspended prisms. The gilt bronze frame is detailed with a pierced foliate frieze running along the circular gallery, decorated with repeating anthemion and floral motifs. The bronze is enriched with a warm gilded surface that provides contrast to the bright clarity of the cut crystal. Each glass element is faceted and cut to catch the light, including round rosette spacers that connect the hanging prisms. The canopy at the top is finished with a crown-like border of upright palmettes and applied floral finials, complementing the gilt bronze gallery below. The chandelier combines the use of heavy gilt bronze mounts with cut glass and crystal prisms characteristic of Regency design. The form, with its corona top, foliate pierced bronze gallery, and dense arrangement of graduated pendants, corresponds to English chandeliers of the early 1800s that drew upon neoclassical ornament. Its large scale and elaborate use of crystal prisms indicate production intended for grand interiors where both illumination and ornament were priorities.
