About the Item
A large and exquisite antique French Baguès-style chandelier in rock crystal and iron. The chandelier is structured in a tiered circular form with a central stem of iron issuing scrolling arms and candleholders. Twelve lights are arranged on two levels, each with faux wax candle sleeves. The frame is draped with an array of rock crystal pendants in varying shapes, including elongated drops, faceted prisms, and octagonal links. Larger pendants are cut from natural rock crystal, displaying cloudy inclusions and natural veining, while clear glass and crystal elements provide contrast. The arms and branches are further decorated with rosettes of faceted crystal centered with flowerhead motifs.
The chandelier is mounted with iron throughout, the metal showing its original darkened patina. Its construction and arrangement of drops align with the style associated with the French house of Baguès, noted for the use of rock crystal and iron mounts. This chandelier retains its full complement of both rock crystal and glass elements, which hang from iron pins and wires affixed to the circular scrolling branches.
The Baguès workshop, established in France in the 19th century, gained recognition for its lighting fixtures featuring wrought iron frames adorned with crystal and rock crystal elements. Their chandeliers frequently incorporated natural rock crystal drops, faceted glass prisms, and floral rosettes, all of which are present here.
