About the Item

A large antique French Empire-style gilt bronze and patinated bronze chandelier. The chandelier is circular in form, designed with a broad corona supporting twelve lights arranged in alternating pairs. Each light is modeled as a candleholder with upright candle-form fittings, resting in gilt foliate sockets mounted on scrolling blackened bronze branches. The branches extend outward from the circular framework, decorated with applied masks, acanthus, and scrolling foliate motifs. The underside is finished with a central gilt bronze terminal in the form of a pinecone finial. The body of the chandelier is richly decorated with gilt bronze ornamentation, including pierced openwork panels with shell and acanthus patterns that form the upper border of the circular corona. The outer ring is further adorned with alternating gilt foliate motifs and dark patinated scrolls. From this framework, the chandelier is suspended by six elaborately cast patinated bronze chains, each composed of interlinked scrollwork and medallion-shaped links. These chains connect to a large ceiling canopy decorated with bold gilt acanthus leaves and classical motifs, from which a short suspension chain extends upward. The chandelier is constructed from gilt bronze and patinated bronze, the contrast between the two finishes highlighting the intricate details of the design. The gilt elements include the candle sockets, shell, and acanthus openwork banding, canopy ornamentation, and the central finial. The dark patinated bronze defines the branching arms, scrolling framework, and chains, providing a strong visual balance. This large-scale chandelier, with its combination of rich materials, decorative detailing, and Empire style motifs, was designed for formal interiors, its structure and ornamentation reflecting the grandeur associated with the Empire aesthetic.
