About the Item
A large and exquisite antique French Louis XVI style gilt bronze and cut crystal chandelier. The chandelier is suspended from a gilt bronze corona cast with foliate detail, issuing multiple scrolling supports from which descend strings of faceted crystal beads and pendants. The central stem is composed of stacked crystal elements, including baluster and urn-shaped sections, forming the vertical core of the chandelier. From this central axis extend eight scrolling gilt bronze candle arms arranged in a circular tier, each terminating in circular drip pans and candle sockets with candle-form lights. The arms are festooned with garlands of cut crystal drops, spheres, and prisms, joined by rosette-headed connections.
The chandelier’s surface is heavily ornamented with an array of crystal pendants of varying shapes and sizes. These include faceted round balls, elongated pear drops, rosette-mounted prisms, diamond-shaped plaques, and star-shaped pendants, all suspended on strands of cut crystal beads. The upper tier displays radiating gilt bronze supports, each draped with crystal swags that cascade downward to join the central framework. The lower section is densely arranged with large faceted crystal spheres and drops that form a circular fringe around the base.
