This exceptional 19th-century chandelier was made on the Continent during a period of great technical and stylistic innovation in European glassmaking. Workshops of the time became known for their mastery of coloured glass, sharply cut crystal, and ambitious multi-tiered designs, producing lighting that represented both stylistic sophistication and modern luxury.
The chandelier is arranged around a tall, tiered central column of cut glass, from which strands of clear and amethyst pendants descend in varied lengths. The combination of pale and deep purple glass creates an unusually rich tonal palette, shifting from gentle lavender notes to saturated, jewel-like hues. Curving arms—later adapted for electricity—project gracefully from the lower tier, each finished with cut-glass bobèches and further amethyst prisms that shimmer vividly when illuminated.
Clear crystal garlands sweep between the levels, enhancing the sense of vertical rhythm and giving the whole structure a refined architectural balance. The interplay between the transparent crystal and the more intensely coloured purple drops produces a lively contrast, fostering decorative and atmospheric harmony.
