A large and highly decorative Italian Murano glass chandelier from the 1950s, featuring hand-blown crystal arms and richly applied pastel glass flowers in pink, blue, yellow, and green. An elegant and sculptural example of mid-century Venetian glass craftsmanship.
This impressive Murano glass chandelier was produced in Italy during the 1950s and exemplifies the postwar Venetian tradition of highly decorative, hand-crafted lighting. The chandelier is entirely hand-blown and assembled using clear cristallo glass, with richly applied floral and foliate elements in soft pastel tones of pink, light blue, yellow, and green.
The sculptural composition is defined by gracefully curved, ribbed glass arms supporting textured glass candle cups, each accented with applied colored rims. Rising from the central stem are delicately formed glass branches, each adorned with individually shaped flowers and leaves. The chandelier is completed with its original tiered glass finial, echoing the polychrome detailing found throughout the piece.
This type of floral Murano chandelier reflects the optimistic and expressive design language of mid-century Italian glassmaking, where traditional techniques were combined with playful color and organic form. Each element was formed separately and assembled by hand, resulting in subtle variations that underscore its artisanal character.
When illuminated, the chandelier offers a warm and refined presence, while unlit it reads as a sculptural glass object with strong visual impact. Its generous scale and intricate detailing make it a distinctive statement piece, suitable for collectors and designers seeking an authentic and expressive Murano work.
Condition
This Murano glass chandelier is in very good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and use consistent with its hand-crafted nature and period. Two of the applied pink glass flowers show small chips, visible only upon close inspection. One green curved glass leaf has a small loss to the tip, and the lower glass finial shows a few minor chips along the rim.
The candle sleeves show wear from age and use. They can be easily replaced if desired, though they retain a pleasing original patina that complements the vintage character of the chandelier.
There are also a few small dark inclusions visible inside some of the glass arms, which are typical for hand-blown Murano glass of this age and do not affect the structure or visual impact. All imperfections are subtle and not noticeable from a normal viewing distance. When installed, the chandelier reads as a full, vibrant floral composition, with the overall impression remaining elegant and harmonious.
The chandelier is structurally sound and presents beautifully.
Two additional glass flowers are included, one with a small chip.
