About the Item
A robust vintage industrial pendant light featuring its original ribbed prismatic glass lens within a cast aluminium enclosure which protects the lamp holder manufactured by POLAM.
The glass is moulded with concentric and vertical prisms designed to refract and diffuse light evenly, typical of industrial or marine lighting. This type is usually called “prismatic glass” or “ribbed prismatic diffuser” — engineered to maximise illumination efficiency while reducing glare.
Polam Gdańsk was a Polish lighting manufacturer active during the mid- to late-20th century, particularly known for producing industrial, marine, and architectural lighting for factories, shipyards, and public buildings across Eastern Europe.
Full name: Zakłady Oświetleniowe Polam Gdańsk (Lighting Works of Gdańsk)
Period: roughly 1950s – 1990s
Location: Gdańsk, Poland — one of the major industrial hubs on the Baltic coast.
Specialism: production of explosion-proof, watertight and weatherproof light fittings (IP65 and IP66 rated) used in shipbuilding, docks, and industrial plants.
Affiliation: part of the POLAM group, a national network of lighting factories established under the socialist economy of the People’s Republic of Poland. Each branch (e.g. Polam Wilkasy, Polam Pabianice, Polam Gdańsk) specialised in different types of fittings—Gdańsk focusing particularly on aluminium and glass marine fixtures.
Legacy: after the 1990s, as state industries were privatised, many Polam factories either closed or merged into larger entities such as ELGO Lighting Industries or Philips Poland, but their products remain collectible for their utilitarian Bauhaus-influenced design and solid engineering.
