About the Item

Two early industrial pendant lamps, designed in the 1950s by Axel Wedel Madsen for renowned Danish lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen. Crafted from enameled steel, they feature a black exterior and a white interior. The lamps come in two different sizes: the larger fixture has four lamp holders, while the smaller one has a single holder. Both are complete with brass chains, hooks, and a white electric cord. Diameter 35 / 40 cm, height 24 / 28 cm, chain length 62 cm. The Danish lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen was founded in 1892 by Ludvig R. Poulsen, originally selling tools and electrical devices. In 1906, the company was taken over by Ludvig’s nephew, Louis Poulsen, who soon renamed it Louis Poulsen Co. About ten years later, industrialist Sophus Kaastrup-Olsen acquired the company, and within the next decade, it had become Denmark’s leading lighting manufacturer. A key collaboration was established in 1924 with Poul Henningsen, resulting in fixtures for the Paris World’s Fair. The following year, Louis Poulsen launched Henningsen’s legendary PH lamp system, which soon became the company’s most important product. After World War II, Louis Poulsen initiated collaborations with many of Denmark’s most renowned architects and designers, including Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton, and Louise Campbell.
