Rare French Bamboo Pendant Chandelier by Louis Sognot, 1950s
A rare French mid-century bamboo pendant chandelier by celebrated designer Louis Sognot, France, circa 1950s.
Crafted from bamboo and fabric, this elegant pendant showcases Sognot’s signature use of natural materials and his refined sense of proportion. Its sculptural yet organic form diffuses a warm, inviting light, making it ideal for modern, coastal, or mid-century interiors.

About Louis Sognot (1892–1970)
Louis Sognot was a pioneering French designer whose work bridged the transition from Art Deco to Mid-Century Modern design. Born in Paris in 1892, he studied at the École Bernard-Palissy, where he developed an early appreciation for craftsmanship and form. After World War I, Sognot began his career as a designer at Au Printemps, one of Paris’s leading department stores, before establishing himself as an influential figure in French decorative arts.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Sognot became known for his elegant and functional furniture, often created in collaboration with other renowned designers, such as Charlotte Alix and Andrée Putman. A founding member of the Union des Artistes Décorateurs (UAD), Sognot played a central role in shaping the aesthetic of modern French design between the wars.
While his early work reflected the geometric precision of Cubism and the luxury of Art Deco, by the 1940s and 1950s he began to explore a more organic and natural aesthetic — notably through his rattan, bamboo, and wood furniture and lighting designs. His creations from this period perfectly embody the warmth and simplicity that would define the French modernist movement of the mid-century.
Louis Sognot’s designs are now highly sought after by collectors and interior designers alike for their timeless elegance, craftsmanship, and sculptural quality. His bamboo and rattan pieces, like this chandelier, capture a unique blend of modern sophistication and natural beauty.
