About the Item

Large French Art Deco Pendant with Exceptionally Thick Alabaster Shade by Marcel Vasseur, Paris, ca. 1920. Impressive and rare French Art Deco pendant light featuring an exceptionally thick alabaster shade of outstanding quality, mounted on a powerful and refined wrought-iron frame designed by Marcel Vasseur, Paris, circa 1920. Produced by Marcel Vasseur Cie, 22 rue Mousset-Robert, Paris. What truly distinguishes this fixture is the remarkable thickness of its alabaster shade, far beyond what is usually encountered, even in period examples. The alabaster walls are notably deep and solid, giving the piece a substantial weight, exceptional durability, and a uniquely rich luminous effect. When illuminated, the thick alabaster diffuses the light slowly and evenly, producing a soft, warm glow with pronounced depth and visual presence. The stone displays natural mineral veining, inherent to alabaster of this quality. These veins may visually resemble cracks, but they are not structural flaws; rather, they are a natural feature of the stone and a clear sign of authenticity. In this particular shade, the veining is beautifully integrated within the dense mass of the alabaster, further emphasizing its exceptional thickness. The sculptural wrought-iron frame reflects Marcel Vasseur’s signature approach: architectural strength, clarity of line, and restrained ornamentation, allowing the exceptional materials to speak for themselves. This pendant is both a functional light fixture and a major statement piece of French Art Deco lighting and ironwork. The fixture is professionally rewired for the destination country (US, UK, EU, Australia, China, etc.) and fitted with three sockets; LED bulbs can be used. Dimensions: Height: 31.5 in (80 cm) Overall diameter: 18.5 in (47 cm) Condition: Very good vintage condition. The alabaster is exceptionally thick, solid, and intact, with natural veining throughout. Light wear consistent with age. Biography — Marcel Vasseur Marcel Vasseur was a leading French ironworker of the Art Deco period, operating under Marcel Vasseur Cie, established at 22 rue Mousset-Robert in Paris. His workshop held a distinctive position in the French decorative metalwork market during the early 20th century. Vasseur’s work is characterized by the strength of form, decisiveness of line, and disciplined use of decoration, qualities that elevate the inherent beauty of wrought iron. His aesthetic places him alongside major figures such as Edgar Brandt, Raymond Subes, Szabo, and Jean Prouvé. In 1925, Marcel Vasseur participated in the landmark Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. For this occasion, he executed all the ironwork for the Pavillon de la Maîtrise, the design studio of Galeries Lafayette, directed by Maurice Dufrêne. Today, Marcel Vasseur’s lighting and ironwork are prized for their architectural presence, material excellence, and timeless Art Deco modernity, making them highly sought after by collectors and interior designers worldwide.
