About the Item

At its most basic level, Mid-Century Modern designs are known for juxtaposing sleek lines with organic shapes, using new materials and methods to reimagine traditional pieces. Materials themselves were a key element and in lighting design, nothing speak Mid-Century Modern more than the combination of brass and glass. As natural light became very important in the era’s architecture, lighting design followed suit to provide a source of cosy light where natural light sources were not available. This ceiling lamp has a unique and stylish design that aims for functionality just as much as it aims for aesthetic appeal. The structure puts emphasis on the three downward facing, opaline glass shades by employing decorative elements that draw the eye. Most apparent are the brass half circles connecting the shade holders to the cluster. These beautifully crafted pieces establish the modern look and complement the spherical shades. The second decorative element is the black colour of the shade holders that contrast nicely with the brass structure and opaline glass. This contrast between the colours and materials naturally engages the eyes and creates a stylish modern aesthetic. When lit, the spherical opaline glass shades brighten up the brass’s colour, and create ambient lighting. The design is very successful in mixing the traditional and modern elements while staying true to the guiding principles of the era’s main design movement. Mid-Century Modern design hasn’t been bested by any other movement since its heyday, and it remains the style of our own time, not of some antique past.
