About the Item

This striking French Mid-Century wrought-iron chandelier was created circa 1950 by Ateliers de Marolles, under the artistic direction of Jean Touret, in collaboration with master ironworker Henri Vion. A powerful and expressive lighting sculpture, this chandelier perfectly illustrates the postwar return to authentic craftsmanship, raw materials, and symbolic design. Inspired by Gothic forms and rural imagery, the chandelier features a distinctive singing rooster motif, a strong symbol of French countryside life and rebirth. The hand-forged iron construction gives the piece a bold, sculptural presence, while maintaining a sense of balance and poetic restraint typical of Jean Touret’s vision. Originally conceived as a functional lighting fixture, this chandelier transcends its utilitarian purpose to become a decorative centerpiece, equally suited for a dining room, entryway, or double-height space. Its artisanal character and expressive ironwork make it a unique statement piece for interiors ranging from rustic-modern to eclectic or minimalist settings. This chandelier is a fine example of the philosophy behind Les Artisans de Marolles, a collective founded by Jean Touret to oppose industrial standardization and revive traditional craftsmanship through collaboration with local artisans. Each object produced was intended to carry meaning, authenticity, and a strong human presence. Dimensions Height: 35.5 in. (90 cm) Diameter: 19.3 in. (49 cm) Condition Very good vintage condition Hand-forged wrought iron with beautiful original patina Consistent with age and artisanal production Additional Information Delivered professionally wired for your country (US, EU, Australia, China, etc.) Bulbs not supplied Compatible with LED bulbs Historical Context After World War II, Jean Touret settled in the rural village of Marolles, near Blois, where he founded Les Artisans de Marolles in 1950. Alongside craftsmen such as carpenter Maurice Leroy and ironworker Henri Vion, Touret created furniture and decorative objects that celebrated traditional know-how, rural life, and artistic integrity. Today, these works are considered key examples of French postwar design and craft revival.
