About the Item

This monumental late 19th century Dutch chandelier, combining hand-painted Delftware porcelain and richly gilt bronze, was conceived as a dramatic centerpiece and today lends itself exceptionally well to Hollywood Regency and high-impact American interiors. Dating from circa 1860–1890, the chandelier exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and artistic ambition of Dutch historicist lighting from the second half of the 19th century. It is constructed around multiple hand-painted Delftware porcelain elements, executed in classic blue-and-white decoration with floral motifs, scrolling ornament, and architectural scenes inspired by traditional Dutch landscapes and decorative traditions. These porcelain elements are combined with an elaborate gilt bronze structure of exceptional quality. The scrolling arms, finely cast details, and sculptural griffin figures demonstrate a high level of craftsmanship, with expressive modeling and carefully articulated forms. The griffins, a symbol traditionally associated with power, protection, and prestige, lend the chandelier a strong sculptural presence and elevate it beyond purely decorative lighting. The architectural composition is monumental yet well balanced, centered around a domed porcelain body and surrounded by nine candle-form light arms. The visual contrast between the luminous blue-and-white porcelain and the warm, richly gilded bronze creates a striking and theatrical effect, making this chandelier an ideal focal point for a grand dining room, formal salon, or statement entry hall. Originally created for an affluent townhouse or estate interior, this chandelier reflects the late 19th century taste for historic revival styles combined with national decorative traditions. Today, pieces of this scale, quality, and visual coherence are increasingly rare, particularly in such well-preserved condition, and are highly sought after by collectors and interior designers alike. With its dramatic scale, sculptural detailing, and refined materials, this chandelier offers both historical authenticity and strong decorative impact, making it equally suited to classical European interiors and bold Hollywood Regency-inspired settings. The chandelier is in very good overall condition. Two porcelain elements show old professional restorations, stabilized and visually discreet, consistent with the age and use of the piece. The restorations do not affect the structural integrity or the visual impact when installed. The gilt bronze elements retain a fine original patina with minor wear appropriate to age. The wiring is not operational and rewiring is recommended, which is standard practice for antique chandeliers of this period and allows adaptation to local electrical standards. The chandelier is fitted for nine E14 light sources.
