Height: 43 cm Shade diameter: 35 cm Weight: 5 kg The Muller brothers, founders of the Muller Frères glassworks in Lunéville, were French art glassmakers of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. The family comprised nine brothers and one sister. They were all trained in the art of glassmaking. The best known are Eugène Muller (1883-1914), Désiré Muller (1877-1952), and Henri Muller (1868-1936). While several works suggest that the Muller brothers, originally from Kalhausen (Moselle), settled in Lunéville in 1870, recent research has established that the eldest brothers of this family left Moselle for Nancy for a very specific reason: they were recruited in 1894 by Emile Gallé. Indeed, the Nancy-based master glassmaker changed his manufacturing strategy and severed his commercial ties with the Meisenthal glassworks in 1894. That same year, Emile Gallé had his own glass furnaces built in Nancy and hired workers: the eldest Muller brothers, Emile, Henri, and Désiré, were then hired by Emile Gallé as clerks or glass engravers and decorators. The eldest Muller brothers were trained in glassmaking at the Saint Louis crystal factory and at the Meisenthal glassworks alongside Désiré Christian. But in 1897, Henri Muller left Émile Gallé, perhaps taking some manufacturing secrets with him. He entered into a partnership with the Croismare glassworks. His production was in direct competition with that of Émile Gallé and the Daum factory. At the time, the glass was blown in Croismare, at the Hinzelin glassworks. A second glassworks was established in Lunéville itself in 1910. Both factories specialized in art glass. Numerous pieces were produced there, of high technical quality and very similar to those produced at Gallé's factory in Nancy: vases, lamps, and trinkets typical of Art Nouveau. The production was most often in multi-layered glass, cut on the wheel or etched with hydrofluoric acid, featuring naturalistic representations. The finest pieces were finished by fire polishing to give them a beautiful shine. From 1905 to 1908, Désiré and Eugène Muller were recruited by Léon Ledru, director of the decoration workshop at the Val-Saint-Lambert crystalworks in Seraing, Belgium. Their work consisted of creating a series of decorative glassware in the Art Nouveau and Nancy School styles. After the First World War, the Muller company prospered, and the factory employed up to three hundred people. Production subsequently evolved towards the Art Deco style, creating in the 1920s numerous marbled glass ceiling lights (glass with pigments incorporated into the glass) or molded glass pieces with brass, bronze, or wrought iron mounts. Toilet sets, atomizers, and perfume bottles were also manufactured in large quantities during this period. Alongside this industrial production, artistic glassware continued to be produced. Following the great crisis, the Muller company went bankrupt in 1933 and the Croismare factory, which had been bought by Daum, closed at the end of 1934. In the 1950s, it was transformed into a glassmaking training center.
