About the Item

Rare and stunning French Art Deco pendant by Muller Frères, Luneville, France, dating to the early 1920s. The pendant features a mottled glass shade, with powders applied between two layers, creating a striking, textured effect. It is suspended from its original silvered bronze canopy and hidden holes, with brass chains, reflecting the fine craftsmanship of the period. The shade is signed "Muller Frères Luneville" with an early 1920s signature (see photo). This chandelier is delivered fully wired for your country's usage (US, UK, EU, China, Australia, etc.) and is compatible with LED bulbs. The Croismare Glassworks, established in 1858 by Eugene-Auguste Guerner, a glass chemist, and merchant Jacob Stenger, began operations in 1859 under the name 'Establishments Guerner' in the village of Croismare, near Nancy, France. Initially producing household glassware, the company was later renamed 'Verrerie Guerner et Bailly' in 1865, after Guerner’s son. Despite challenges from cheap glass imports, the company expanded in 1868, though it eventually ceased production due to economic pressures. In 1894, a group of investors revived the factory as 'SA des Verreries de Croismare.' By 1913, the workforce had dwindled to 200 employees, and operations halted during World War I. In 1919, the Muller brothers, Auguste, Henri, and Désiré, took over the factory, marking a new chapter in the history of the glassworks. The Muller family, originally from Kalhausen, had deep roots in the glass industry, having worked with renowned companies such as Gallé and Daum. By the early 1900s, they established their own workshops in Luneville, before taking on the Croismare factory. They innovated in glassmaking, refining techniques such as cameo engraving, inlaid glass, enameling, and overlays, and produced exquisite, sometime unique, pieces signed 'Muller Croismare prés Nancy.' In 1919, the glassworks were renovated, with new ovens installed, and the new entity 'Les Grandes Verreries et Cristalleries de Croismare' was born. Throughout the 1920s, the Muller brothers continued to thrive in their craft, producing groundbreaking Art Deco designs. Their pieces, often monumental in size, featured molded-pressed glass plaques, frosted or polished with acid or wheel work. The animal-shaped vases and the iconic chandeliers from this period are some of the most beautiful creations of the era. By 1927, the two Muller entities merged under the name 'Grandes Verreries de Croismare et Verrerie d'Art Muller Fre`res Re´unies SA,' with operations in Croismare and Luneville.
