About the Item

A beautiful and early Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp, model 1382, manufactured by Taito. This lamp was originally ordered for the Julkvärvi Camping resort, a retreat for Finlayson employees, which opened in 1950. The design features a structure made entirely of cast brass (excluding the rod and canopy) with eight arms extending at two levels, forming a distinctive square shape when viewed from below. A timeless piece, this lamp complements both modern interiors and spaces with classical or eclectic influences. Acquired directly from the original building upon the resort’s closure, the lamp remains in its original condition with a rich patina on the brass. It can be polished upon request. The wiring has been updated to meet modern safety standards. Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a Finnish designer celebrated worldwide for his exceptional lighting designs. Often referred to as the man who "illuminated Finland," his works grace prominent spaces such as the Finnish Parliament House and the office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York. Tynell began his career as a sheet metal apprentice at G.W. Sohlberg’s workshop in 1906 before joining Taidetakomo Koru Oy in 1912, a metal workshop specializing in electric lighting. He later studied and taught at Helsinki’s Central School of Applied Arts. In 1918, he co-founded Taito Oy, which initially produced various metal goods before focusing on lighting as electricity became widespread in Finland. By the 1930s, as Finnish households embraced electric lighting, Taito’s fixtures grew in popularity. Early commissions included fixtures for Alvar Aalto’s Paimio Sanatorium. After World War II, Tynell achieved international acclaim, particularly in the U.S. market, where his designs—sold through Finland House in New York—became bestsellers. Though his postwar aesthetic initially faced criticism in Finland, his persistence paid off, and today his lamps are highly sought after, with exceptional pieces commanding significant prices at auction. While many of his commissioned works remain undocumented, his legacy endures as a master of mid-century lighting design.
