About the Item

The elegant pair of antique French Louis XVI chandeliers, crafted from gilt bronze and adorned with white opaline glass, features baluster-form central stems made of opaline glass that serve as the vertical core of each piece. The stems are composed of graduated sections, the lowest of which terminates in a gilt bronze acorn-shaped finial. From the midsection, six scrolling gilt bronze arms extend outward, each ending in circular drip pans and candle sockets designed for electrification. The arms are enriched with leaf scroll motifs, and the sockets are fitted with candle-form lights. Decorative gilt bronze collars, acanthus leaf mounts, and ribbon-like swags encircle the opaline glass, adding articulation between glass and metal. The gilt bronze mounts are chased with neoclassical ornament, including acanthus, laurel, and ribbon patterns. The opaline glass sections are smooth and opaque, contrasting with the textured bronze surfaces. The six-arm design is evenly balanced around the central stem, uniting the decorative and structural elements into a cohesive form. Produced in France in the Louis XVI style, these chandeliers combine the ornamental vocabulary of the late 18th century with materials favored in the 19th century.
