About the Item
A unique and exquisite Pair of Fine Antique French Baguès Gilt Bronze
Rock Crystal Chandeliers. Each chandelier is constructed with a central gilt bronze frame, scrolling outward to support multiple tiers of rock crystal prisms, pendants, and floral rosettes. The structure holds eight candle-form lights, each mounted on rock crystal bobèches with faceted drops suspended beneath. The upper section rises in a bouquet of gilt branches decorated with additional rock crystal pear-shaped drops, star-shaped prisms, and flower-form ornaments. The lower section is arranged with large tear-shaped pendants and faceted spheres, creating a fully encrusted design of cut crystal elements.
The mounts are executed in fire-gilt bronze, cast with slender scrolling arms that support both the lights and the crystal embellishments. The bronze retains its gilded surface, contrasting with the clarity of the rock crystal. The bobèches, stems, and finials are all cut from solid rock crystal, with visible tooling lines and faceted edges. Each chandelier terminates with a large spherical rock crystal pendant suspended at the base, completing the balanced construction.
These chandeliers are attributed to Maison Baguès, the Parisian firm renowned for the use of rock crystal and gilt bronze in lighting design. Maison Baguès was established in the mid-19th century and became particularly noted for its elaborate chandeliers and wall lights, employing high-quality rock crystal and finely cast gilt bronze.
