About the Item
An exquisite pair of fine antique French Louis XVI style gilt bronze figural chandeliers. Each chandelier is structured around a central baluster-form body, richly cast and finished with a bright gilt surface. The upper portion is decorated with a triad of winged cherub heads projecting outward, each framed by scrolling acanthus straps and floral devices. From the central stem, eight scrolling arms extend, each terminating in a circular drip pan and candle nozzle, all cast with relief foliate and floral patterns. The underside of each chandelier is finished with a turned acorn-form pendant.
These chandeliers are produced in gilt bronze, with elaborate casting and detailed chasing across their surfaces. The cherub-head mounts at the crown are cast in full relief, while the circular drip pans feature tooled ornamentation of scrolls and floral motifs. The octagonal midsection displays engraved panels of foliage and strapwork, bordered by molded edges. The scrolling branches are cast in flattened curves, secured to the body with shaped collars. Each socket is fitted for electrical lighting but retains the proportions of traditional candleholders.
The Louis XVI style, firmly established in the late 18th century, is here represented by the symmetrical arrangement of branches, classical ornament, and figural details. Chandeliers of this type were commonly produced in leading French foundries during the 19th century, with close attention to casting precision and surface gilding. The use of gilt bronze, with its durable and reflective finish, was favored for luxury lighting fixtures of this period. This pair reflects the French tradition of neoclassical lighting, incorporating decorative vocabulary drawn directly from antiquity and the decorative arts of the reign of Louis XVI.
