About the Item
A vast and extremely unusual pair of Large Maison Baguès Rock Crystal Chandeliers. Each chandelier is constructed in a tall, multi-tiered form with a central stem adorned throughout with strings of rock crystal beads. The frame supports twelve scrolling candle branches in gilt bronze, each terminating in a circular drip pan and faux wax candle sleeves fitted for lights. The arms are wrapped in beadwork and hung with large rock crystal pendants in teardrop and oval shapes, alternating with fluted and floral-form crystal rosettes. Additional strands of crystal beads drape between the branches, reinforcing the overall latticework structure.
The upper section of the chandeliers rises to a crown-like composition, with upright supports wrapped in beads and surmounted by crystal flowers. Long faceted crystal drops and floral rosettes hang from the crown, cascading downward in graduated tiers. The central column is completely encased in rock crystal beadwork, from which further pendants are suspended. The overall framework is enriched with carved rock crystal drops, faceted prisms, and molded rosettes, combining both clear and slightly smoky-toned stones.
Maison Baguès, founded in Paris in the mid-19th century, became renowned for its lighting and furniture, particularly for the use of rock crystal in elaborate chandeliers.
