About the Item
A pair of superb and unusual French Empire ormolu chandelier sconces. Each sconce is surmounted by a sculptural mount of doves perched on a cascading floral garland, modeled in high relief and extending upward above the candle branches. The birds are rendered with spread wings, positioned to frame the floral suspension that connects them to the structure below. Five scrolling candle arms radiate outward from the central stem, each terminating in circular drip pans and candle sockets designed for electrification. The branches are richly decorated with acanthus leaf motifs and voluted scrolls, with the composition unified by a central stem that concludes in a pinecone-form finial.
The sconces are cast entirely in ormolu, with surface chasing visible in the treatment of the foliage, floral garlands, and bird figures. The drip pans are ribbed with molded edges, while the candle sockets are designed as stylized flower buds. The scrolling arms incorporate circular interlaced motifs and acanthus volutes, emphasizing the structural balance of the five-light arrangement.
