About the Item
A palatial and large 19th century Baccarat cut crystal chandelier composed of tiered crystal elements, hand-cut prisms, and acid-etched glass shades. The chandelier features a central baluster stem intricately faceted and hung with graduated prisms and drops, each finished with pointed finials. Surrounding this stem are multiple curved crystal arms of clear glass, extending outward to support candle-form lights set within flared etched hurricane glass globes. Each shade is delicately acid-etched with stylized acanthus motifs along the upper borders.
The lower section is structured around a central cut crystal dish, from which further strands of faceted prisms and pendants descend in symmetrical arrangement. The bobeches supporting the candle arms are of cut crystal, similarly adorned with faceted drops. The chandelier culminates in a domed base of diamond-cut crystal, finished with elongated prisms and a central faceted crystal sphere. The visual rhythm of alternating round and oblong elements emphasizes the precision of Baccarat’s cutting and the purity of the crystal material.
Produced by Baccarat, one of France’s most renowned crystal manufacturers, this chandelier represents the height of 19th century glassmaking. Baccarat was celebrated for its precise cutting, flawless clarity, and consistency of design. The acid-etched hurricane globes, a distinguishing feature of Baccarat’s grand chandeliers, required specialized chemical and mechanical processes that produced crisp, uniform designs.
