About the Item

A green and white outdoor pendant light designed by Poul Henningsen exclusively for Tivoli Gardens in 1949 and never put into public production. This playful pendant light was designed by Henningsen whilst he was the head architect at Tivoli Gardens during the Second World War. The lights hung in groups of three above the various gardens and attractions in the heart of Copenhagen, and were designed to gently rotate above the crowds: “When I was commissioned to design new lighting around the Tivoli Lake it hit me that a slowly rotating spiral lamp would give a discreet and fine effect. Discretion is important because too much rotation would make people feel drunk ...” Like so many of Poul Henningsen's lights, the design of the Tivoli Garden pendant diffuses light beautifully, filtering it through a clear acrylic column encased by a white spiral. The light is in good vintage condition, with only slight discolouration to the acrylic panels, and has been rewired to UK standard.
