About the Item
Pendant model 81003 by Gunnel Nyman for Idman Oy, 1950s. Chrome frame with milk glass shade. Good vintage condition, patina consistent with age and use. Two pendants, sold separately.
Gunnel Nyman is one of the best-known Finnish glass designers. She worked as a designer between 1932 and 1948 at all the major Finnish glass factories: in Riihimäki, Karhula, Iittala and Nuutajärvi. Nyman's design career was not limited to glass, however. Nyman graduated as a furniture designer in 1932 and designed not only furniture but also lighting and textiles. Nyman was a hard-working and dedicated designer who was always ready to take on new opportunities. As a freelance designer, she was able to work for several manufacturers at the same time. Gunnel Nyman died after a long illness in 1948. She did not experience the success of Finnish design in the 1950s. After her death, Nyman was awarded a gold medal for glass design at the 1951 Milan Triennale.
