About the Item
Another top quality, antique French pendant light with a perfect Art Deco design.
This stunning and finer quality Art Deco ceiling lamp was realized by glass studio Léon Auguste Hugue (Paris, 1878 – Clichy-la-Garenne, 1970) who began his career as a bronze fitter. In 1907, he established his own bronze lighting manufacturing business at 14 rue Pierre Levée. In 1913, he created a new limited partnership, "L. Hugue, fabrique de bronzes et d’appareils d’éclairage," at number 10 in the same street. The business grew, and around 1925, he set up a factory at 68 rue des Rondeaux, where he worked with the help of his son Maurice Léon, also a bronze fitter. At the 1927 Exhibition in Madrid, he received the Gold Medal diploma alongside Francis Hubens. Strangely, in 1932, Léon Hugue sold his company to Charles Frères, only to re-purchase just the factory at 68 rue des Rondeaux two years later, in 1934. Following the death of his third wife, Marie-Félicie Foussard, in 1938 (he was married four times in total), Léon Hugue had to buy back her shares, which had been inherited by his granddaughter Claudine-Jeanne Ranc, also the granddaughter of another major bronze lighting manufacturer, Charles Ranc. His company remained active until at least the beginning of World War II. Léon Hugue passed away in Clichy-la-Garenne shortly before his 92nd birthday.
