About the Item

A rare and superb antique Russian Neoclassical gilt bronze and amber glass chandelier. The chandelier features a six-arm structure composed of scrolling branches, each terminating in a candle-form light with gilt bronze bobeches shaped with acanthus detailing. Suspended from the arms and frame are faceted drops of amber-colored glass, alternating with clear rock crystal prisms, which vary in size and include elongated pendants, oval drops, and rosettes. At the center, a sculpted gilt bronze bird with spread wings is perched upon a polished sphere, forming a key focal point of the chandelier. The frame is enriched with foliate scrollwork and classical ornamentation, completed with a pendant finial. The chandelier is constructed in gilt bronze with detailed chasing visible across the arms, supports, and central architectural structure. The design incorporates Neoclassical motifs, including acanthus leaves, scrolls, and a strong symmetrical arrangement of branches radiating around the central bird figure. Rock crystal and amber glass prisms are hung from rosette mounts, secured with bronze pins, and suspended from both the arms and the upper tier. The upper canopy rises with curved foliate scrolls supporting additional drops, while the lower finial terminates in a pendant cluster of crystals. This chandelier was produced in Russia in the Neoclassical period, a time when workshops combined traditional bronze casting with imported and local crystal elements. Russian bronze manufacturers of the 18th and early 19th centuries were known for their precision casting and gilding techniques, often incorporating symbolic figures such as birds or mythological motifs within the framework of their chandeliers. The use of both rock crystal and amber glass prisms aligns with Russian preferences for color contrasts within lighting pieces of this type, reflecting the technical achievements of bronze workshops in Moscow and St. Petersburg during the era.
