About the Item

A rare pair of Finnish mid-century pendant lights combining softly glowing opaline glass with new, high-quality handmade wooden slat lampshades, produced to closely follow the original design and proportions. Each pendant features a rounded opaline glass diffuser framed by a wide cylindrical shade built from closely spaced vertical wooden slats, bound with horizontal stitching. The warm tone of the wood contrasts gently with the smooth glass surface, while nickel plated metal stems and matching ceiling canopies add a restrained, graphic counterpoint. Designed by Gunilla Jung for Orno Oy, these pendants date to the 1940s, a formative period in Finnish lighting design. During this time, modernist ideas were increasingly combined with natural materials to create softer, more atmospheric interiors. Jung’s work for Orno Oy is recognized for its clear functional thinking, material sensitivity, and carefully balanced forms. Installed together, the pendants work beautifully above a dining table, kitchen island, or in a larger open space where their scale and construction can be fully appreciated. They bring warmth, rhythm, and a strong Nordic modernist presence to an interior, functioning both as practical lighting and as expressive design objects. • Height: 67 cm • Shade diameter: 53 cm • Material: Opaline glass, wood, nickel plated metal • Designer: Gunilla Jung • Manufacturer: Orno Oy • Period: 1940s • Origin / Country: Finland • Condition: Vintage components in good condition with light age-related wear; new handmade wooden slat lampshades • Set info: Pair of pendants NOTE ON THE DESIGNER – Gunilla Jung was a Finnish designer active in the mid-20th century, best known for her lighting designs for Orno Oy.
